Breast shields, also known as flanges, are plastic funnel-shaped pieces that are placed on your breast. This is the only breast pump part that actually touches your skin. Their purpose is to begin the process of collecting your breast milk. Think of them as a funnel that leads to your milk storage container. You place them on your breast and center them with your nipple. Some come with a connector attached and some you have to attach to a connector, which I will get into below.
