What color is your Breastmilk?
Colostrum
Colostrum promotes growth and health in infants and newborn animals, but research shows that taking bovine colostrum supplements may promote immunity, help fight infections, and improve gut health throughout life. Colostrum is the first breast milk that your breasts or mammary glands make during pregnancy and in the first few days after the birth of a child. It is the first stage of breast milk production.

Foremilk

Foremilk is the watery milk that your nursing baby gets first, which consists of low fat content and high lactose content. The foremilk helps quench your baby’s thirst, and stimulate energy and brain development. Hindmilk, on the other hand, is the creamy milk with higher fat content that is stored in the milk-making cells located higher up in the breast, and helps stimulate your baby’s growth.

Hindmilk

Hindmilk is the high-fat, high-calorie breast milk that your baby gets toward the end of a feeding. It's richer, thicker, and creamier than foremilk, the breast milk that your baby gets when he first starts to breastfeed. The color of hindmilk is creamy white. Hindmilk satisfies your baby's hunger and makes your baby feel full and sleepy. It also helps your baby feel fuller longer.

Red of Pink Breastmilk

This may be caused by mom's diet, common causes include food dyes, soda and bright-colored vegetables such as beets or squash. Another cause of pink-tinged or blood-streaked milk is the harmless ‘rusty pipe’ syndrome.

WHAT'S RUST PIPE SYNDROME?

Result of old blood left inside of the milk ducts from vascular breast engorgement. Vascular engorgement is when a part of the body fills with blood or another fluid.

Green Breastmilk

This is most likely to be caused by eating lots of green (or blue) colored foods. Common foods that cause this are often vitamin-packed plant-based foods such as spinach or seaweed. Foods that contain blue dyes may also be responsible for green-tinged milk. Certain herbals medicines or supplements may also cause your milk to become green-tinged.

(This breastmilk usually appears in vegan mothers)
