I tested positive for COVID-19. Can I continue breastfeeding?

Of course, you can! It is common knowledge that breastfeeding is the best source of nutrients for our little ones and helps them to boost their immunity against many illnesses. But as the pandemic carries on, more mothers who are symptomatic are admitted into hospitals and separated from their babies, thus making breastfeeding a challenge for both mother and child.

The thought of also transmitting the virus to our children is a threat that we should not take lightly. But it is a relief to know that more research suggests breast milk cannot transmit the COVID-19 virus to our children. More dedicated breastfeeding moms who are affected by the virus continue to express breast milk for their babies as their breast milk now contains more antibodies that may fight off the virus. But what are the necessary precautions every mother should make in these situations? Let’s check out some of these tips from the World Health Organization to know more.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after feeding. It is always important to practice good hygiene whether or not you are symptomatic.
  2. Disinfect any surface that you touch.
  3. If you tested positive or have respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or even being short of breath, use a medical mask whenever you are near your child or when feeding.
  4. If you are severely ill or admitted to a medical facility and are therefore unable to feed your baby, use a breast pump to express milk so you can continue to provide breast milk. Continue pumping milk to ensure that your supply will not decrease.
  5. Enlist the support of your family in taking care of your baby as you continue to practice physical distancing as a precaution of not getting your baby infected by the virus as well.

Get enough sleep, eat plenty of healthy food and try to exercise to reduce stress and stay healthy. Stay optimistic despite these dire times. Remember that the best way to protect your child is to take care of yourself first. And as always, consult with your pediatrician about how best to manage the situation.

Stay safe mommies!
